Nairobi, Kenya - The free birth registration window, launched by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, is set to close on August 16, 2019.
According to a notice published in the Kenya Gazette on August 9, 2019, the free registration process, which began on June 27, 2019, will end on August 16, 2019.
"With effect from the 27th June 2019, all applications for registration of births and for issuance of certificates of birth were exempted from payment of registration fees and fees chargeable for issuance of certificates of birth," read a part of the notice.
Launched on June 28, 2019, the initiative aims to hasten the processing of birth certificates and streamline the provision of various services, including civil registration to citizens.
"Birth registration is the starting line for the government's policy and planning. Some Kenyans cannot easily access government services; other children have not been registered on National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) because they do not have birth certificates, and we have set about taking the burden off our people," Matiang'i said when he launched the initiative in Kajiado County.
