Chelsea manager Frank Lampard faced criticism from his former boss Jose Mourinho after Sunday's 4-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Mourinho, who made his debut as a television pundit for Sky Sports on the day, questioned Lampard's tactical approach and team selection, particularly his decision to start midfielder N'Golo Kante on the bench.

"I think they can when they are facing teams like Chelsea, I think they were too soft," Mourinho said, criticizing Manchester United's strikers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

"(Chelsea) were not compact defensively, too much space to play, not enough aggression on the ball, the defensive line, the midfield, the attack, they were not compact," Mourinho added.

Lampard appeared surprised by Mourinho's comments, particularly about 20-year-old Mason Mount, who was making his Premier League debut.

"He didn't like the performance of Mason Mount? Did he say Mason Mount?" Lampard asked, before saying fitness issues had influenced his choices.

"Well I can't drag people out of the medical room to play. If they are experienced or not, the players are the players that played today," Lampard said.
