Naivasha, Kenya - Matatu operators wait for customers at Kinangop bus stage. The Central Rift Matatu Owners Association has petitioned the government to form a special unit to dismantle the gangs.
According to the association's chairman, David Kuria, the gangs have displaced public service vehicles from county-owned termini and are largely responsible for fixing high fare prices during peak seasons.
At a consultative meeting convened by the National Police Service and Matatu SACCOS, Kuria called on the government to intervene as the matatu sector provides a livelihood for millions of Kenyans.
Deputy Sub County Police Commander Daniel Gitavi assured the operators that detectives had stepped up crackdown against the gangs and extended the operation to estates where they retreat after committing crimes.
A report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that some gangs are being propped up by former employees of matatu Saccos who were fired for indiscipline or other reasons.
The report also detailed how some unscrupulous drivers and touts are being used as couriers for illicit brews and narcotics, networking with members of organized gangs to convey contrabands into estates.
