On August 10, 2019, a Norwegian Air Boeing 787 experienced a technical failure while taking off from Fiumicino airport near Rome, Italy. The plane dropped debris, including pieces up to 10 centimeters in diameter, as it passed over the Isla Sacra area outside Rome.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera, the plane then turned back to the airport after the incident.
Video from the Associated Press, shared by Mail Online, shows the smashed windows in the area and residents holding the piece of debris.
Local authorities reported that 25 cars and 12 homes were damaged in the incident. One resident described the debris as falling "like bullets," while another man said he felt "lucky to be alive" after being hit by a piece.
A spokesperson for Norwegian said that the plane, bound for Los Angeles, turned back to the airport due to indications of a technical failure of one of the engines. The plane landed safely.
ENAC, Italy's flight safety agency, is investigating the incident.
