On Friday, residents of Shauri Moyo estate in Nairobi gathered at the Shauri Moyo YMCA hall to discuss President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda, which includes a housing project.
Under the project, the government plans to demolish houses in Shauri Moyo and other neighboring estates in the Eastlands region and replace them with modern apartments owned by Kenyans under a special program.
However, residents are skeptical about the project, citing concerns over where they will go when their houses are demolished and whether they will be offered the new houses if they cannot afford to pay for them.
“Where will we go when our houses are brought down?” one resident asked the moderators.
President Kenyatta has promised to build 500,000 decent and affordable housing units by 2022, but the project's delivery outlines four levels of housing types, with only three currently under focus.
