On Monday, August 12, 2019, the Lamu OCS and three junior officers were arrested for releasing a suspected drug trafficker from the Lamu Police Station.
The arrest came hours after Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i warned that tough action would be taken in the coastal region to curb drug trafficking during his tour in Mombasa County on Sunday, August 11, 2019.
Dr. Matiang'i linked the recent attacks in Kisauni, which left 13 people injured, to the movement of drugs.
Chief Kadhi Ahmed Muhdhar also expressed concern over the recent spate of violence involving gangs in Mombasa and called on security organs to take swift action.
Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir praised the arrest of the Lamu OCS and proposed freezing the accounts of individuals suspected to be involved in illicit drug trade.
