Published on August 12, 2019, a mass circumcision exercise in Samburu County has taken an unusual turn with the procurement of 20,000 knives by Governor Moses Lenolkulal.
The move, aimed at reducing the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), is a stark contrast to previous years where a single knife was used on all the boys.
According to the governor, the use of a single knife and gloves for each initiate will reduce the possibility of disease infections such as HIV and AIDS, Hepatitis, and others.
Local religious and political leaders, traditional male circumcisers, and initiates graced the colourful event where the knives were blessed by elders at Nyiro area in Samburu North.
Governor Lenolkulal assured the boys set for circumcision that their spots in school were secured, adding that they would be re-enrolled after the ceremony.
“For those boys who will be undergoing circumcision, we will ensure that they have continued with their education because we have a history that after circumcision many boys drop out of school due to moranism,” he pledged.
