Published on August 12, 2019, a coalition of partners has launched an initiative to address the high unemployment rate in the country. The programme, dubbed Kuza Kazi, aims to train 1,000 youth in Kwale County on entrepreneurship.
During the launch in Lunga Lunga sub-county, 135 beneficiaries received a full business starter kit consisting of an ice box and a variety of Coca Cola products. The initiative is part of nine others aimed at addressing the issue of youth unemployment.
According to Joyce Wafula, the Chief of Party, USAid Kenya Youth Employment and Skills Programme, the initiative is expected to help local youth set up businesses and discourage them from joining violent extremist groups. “We want more youth to venture in enterprises and ensure they earn a living and turn away from crime,” she said.
The programme targets Kwale County due to its low literacy levels and youth vulnerability to crime. The initiative is a collaborative effort between Coca Cola Central, East and West Africa, the county, and Kwale Youth Bunge Sacco.
