Real Madrid's pre-season campaign ended on a disappointing note after suffering a 5-4 defeat on penalties to AS Roma in a thrilling friendly clash played at Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, August 11, 2019.
Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane named a strong side, recalling Gareth Bale back to the squad for the final pre-season fixture. However, the Wales striker failed to make the starting line-up, with Zidane preferring Eden Hazard and Karim Benzema upfront.
The match saw Marcelo Vieira hand the visitors an early lead in the 16th minute, before Diego Perotti equalised for the Italian side in the 34th minute. Roma would however go down again five minutes later as Casemiro made it 2-1 after being picked out superbly by Luka Modric.
Former Man City star Perotti restored parity a minute later, with the two sides settling for a draw into the break. With neither side finding the back of the net in the second half, the match had to be decided on penalties that Roma eventually won to lift the Mabel Green Cup.
