On August 11, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced a renewed effort to combat drug trafficking at the Coast, which he linked to the rise of killer gangs terrorizing residents.
Speaking in Mombasa after a three-hour meeting with security and political leaders, Dr. Matiang'i acknowledged the risks involved in tackling the issue but vowed to take them head-on.
"We are beginning an unprecedented effort to deal with drug peddling. I do not doubt that it is going to be painful, but we are prepared to start this journey," Dr. Matiang'i said.
He emphasized that the government would move beyond mere talk and promises, instead delivering tangible results in the fight against drug trafficking.
Dr. Matiang'i's visit to Mombasa was prompted by the Monday attack on Bamburi residents by a criminal gang that left 13 people injured.
He stated that the government's efforts to improve youth programs in Mombasa were being hindered by drug dealers, and that it was time for the government to make tough choices to protect the lives of young people.
