On a sunny Sunday, August 11, 2019, Arsenal began their new season with a resounding 1-0 victory over Newcastle at St. James Park.

It was a day of firsts for the Gunners, as they welcomed three new signings, including Nicolas Pepe, who made their Premier League debut in the second half.

Steve Bruce, the new Newcastle manager, was also making his competitive debut, following the departure of Rafa Benitez.

Despite Newcastle's strong start, with Shelvey smashing the post and debutant Joelinton shooting straight at Bernd Leno, Arsenal's best chance in the first half came through Aubameyang, who tested Dubravka with a decent volleyed shot.

The second half was action-packed, with Arsenal's sharpness upfront breaking the deadlock in the 58th minute, thanks to Maitland-Niles's quick-fire counter attack.

Aubameyang scored the opener, and despite Newcastle's advances upfront, the Gunners managed to hold on to claim all three points away from home in their season opener.
