On Sunday, August 11, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang'i held a security meeting in Mombasa to address the growing concerns of organized criminal gangs in the Coast region.
The meeting came in the wake of a gang attack in Kisauni area blamed on the 'Wakali Kwanza' group that left 14 people nursing serious injuries.
Dr. Matiang'i attributed the increased criminality in the area to illicit drug use among the youth and declared an operation targeting drug dealers and users in Mombasa and its environs.
The operation, which will target everyone involved in the intricate web of illegal drugs trade, irrespective of their status in society, will be led by the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai.
Dr. Matiang'i demanded weekly reports on the progress of the operation, which was endorsed by leaders who accompanied him to the meeting.
