On August 11, 2019, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion called for the abolition of the Teachers' Service Commission (TSC).
According to Sossion, the commission has hindered efforts to resolve the ongoing stalemate between the government and teachers.
He proposed that an independent body be created to regulate teachers' welfare, and that the TSC's mandate be limited to employing teachers.
"The mandate that we granted TSC is bad, we need to return it back into the Ministry of Education," Sossion said during a fundraiser at Ambrose Adeya Adongo Secondary School in Alego/Usonga.
He was echoed by Funyula Member of Parliament Wilberforce Oundo, who urged the TSC to "respect teachers".
