On August 9, a rare spectacle unfolded in Karia village, Kirinyaga county, when the body of Peter Njagi, a former teacher, was hurriedly interred after four years in the morgue.
The burial ceremony was marked by a lack of respect, with mourners denied access to the burial site and no eulogies delivered by his three wives.
According to reports, the deceased was a high school principal who died in August 2015. His remains were preserved at Embu Level Five hospital mortuary pending the determination of a case filed by his three widows over property.
Two presiding pastors from the Anglican Church conducted the burial service under a tree, as there seemed to be no middle ground. The 30-minute internment process was a stark contrast to the usual dignified ceremonies held for respected members of society.
Residents and relatives were left shaking their heads in dismay as they watched the burial unfold. The incident has sparked widespread discussion about the respect and dignity afforded to the deceased in such situations.
