Uhuru Kenyatta Mourns Tanzanian Fuel Tanker Victims ¶
On August 10, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta joined Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli in mourning the victims of a devastating fuel tanker explosion in Morogoro, Tanzania.
At least 60 people lost their lives in the tragedy, with many others suffering serious burns. The victims were reportedly trying to fetch fuel from a tanker that had overturned on a major road.
President Uhuru Kenyatta sent a condolence message to President Magufuli, assuring him of Kenya's full support and prayers during this difficult moment.
"To my Brother, President John Pombe Magufuli, may I assure you of my government's support during this trying moment," Uhuru said.
Other Kenyan leaders, including Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and Woman Representative Esther Passaris, also sent their condolences to the affected families.
The fuel tanker explosion in Tanzania came just a month after a similar incident in Nigeria, where almost 45 people were reportedly killed in an explosion.
Related accidents involving fuel tankers have also been reported in Kenya, with one of the most horrific incidents occurring on the Nairobi-Naivasha highway in December 2016, when at least 30 people died.
