On August 10, 2018, Miguna Miguna, a Kenyan-born lawyer, was deported from Kenya for the second time in a span of two months. This time, he has decided to take a stand and sue the Kenyan government officials he holds responsible for his ordeal.
According to court documents filed on August 10, 2018, Miguna claims that he is a Kenyan citizen by birth and has never renounced his citizenship as government authorities had claimed. He accuses 25 government officials, including Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, of denying him his Kenyan citizenship.
Miguna further alleges that the officials destroyed his Kenyan passport and forcibly kicked him out of the country without notice. He also claims to have been physically assaulted, abducted, and detained under cruel, inhumane, and degrading conditions for six days at Githunguri Police Station prior to his deportation.
These actions, Miguna claims, have prevented him from working and earning a living to support his family. The self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general has named several government officials as respondents in the case, including the Attorney-General, Immigration Principal Secretary, Director of Criminal Investigations, Director of Public Prosecutions, and Director of Immigration and Registration of Persons.
Miguna's trouble with the Immigration authorities began after he administered an oath on Opposition leader Raila Odinga during his mock swearing-in ceremony on January 30, 2018.
