Published on August 10, 2019, five Members of Parliament in Kenya have called for the abolition of the Teacher's Service Commission (TSC) and its replacement with an independent body to oversee teachers' welfare.
Leading the call is Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion, who was joined by MPs Samuel Moroto, Samuel Atandi, Gideon Ochanda, and Wilberforce Mudenyo.
The MPs, who spoke at a fundraiser in Siaya County, criticized the TSC for its handling of teachers' welfare, including the deduction of teachers' salaries and withholding of union dues.
"We must deal with this rogue commission. It has failed to champion the rights and welfare of teachers for which it was created," said Mr Sossion.
The proposed amendments to the TSC Act would see the commission's role limited to the employment of teachers, with an independent body taking over policy matters.
The MPs also called on the Ministry of Education to engage in dialogue with teachers over the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
"Listen to teachers and do not play politics of divide and rule that is being witnessed in the teachers' unions," said Mr Atandi.
