On August 10, 2019, a devastating landslide struck a village in Paung township, southeastern Myanmar, burying over a dozen houses and claiming the lives of at least 10 people.

Rescue efforts were underway, with backhoes and bulldozers clearing the mud and debris from the affected area. The Global New Light of Myanmar reported that some residents remained unaccounted for.

Mon state's top official, Aye Zan, visited the site and met with villagers who had been relocated to a relief camp due to flooding caused by torrential rains.

According to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, monsoon flooding had displaced over 7,000 people in Mon state this week alone. The disaster also affected other townships, with houses and a school washed away, roads blocked, and villages submerged.

As of this week, nearly 12,000 people had been displaced in Myanmar, bringing the total number of those in evacuation centers to over 38,000, the U.N. reported.
