Pregnant Woman Sentenced to 30 Years for Killing Drunken Husband

On August 10, 2019, a Nyeri court handed down a 30-year prison sentence to a 28-year-old pregnant woman, Emily Mukiri, for her role in the death of her husband, Francis Mwiti Mukio.

Mukiri pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter after initially being charged with murder. The offense was reduced as part of a plea bargain agreement with the prosecution.

The incident occurred in August 2019 at the couple's home in Muthinga shopping center, Tetu sub-county, where Mukiri allegedly stabbed her husband multiple times in the abdomen and face with a knife following a domestic quarrel.

The two had argued after Mukio arrived home drunk at around 1 am. He succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Nyeri County Referral Hospital.

During the sentencing, the defense argued that Mukiri was a victim of domestic violence, was still young, and a mother of two young children. However, High Court Justice Abigail Mshila ruled that the offense was unfortunate, but the accused did not deserve a non-custodial sentence.
