Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has found himself in the midst of a leadership dispute at the Nairobi Central SDA (Maxwell Church) branch, forcing him to switch churches.

According to reports, the dispute has led to Matiang'i leaving the Maxwell Church and joining the SDA Karengata branch in Karen.

Other high-profile individuals who have been affected by the dispute include Chief Justice David Maraga, Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri, Senator Chris Obure, and MPs Millie Odhiambo and Simba Arati.

On August 10, 2019, the dispute led to worshippers being barred from attending the Maxwell Church, with some being forced to hold their services at the nearby St. George's High School.

The dispute is believed to have originated from a contentious election of leaders at the Central Kenya Conference, which has led to a split between two factions vying for control.
