On a Friday, the 8th Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) celebrated outstanding journalists from Royal Media Services. The event highlighted the critical role the media plays in seeking and relaying the truth, as emphasized by chief guest Hon. Raila Odinga.
Citizen TV's Makori Ongechi and cameraman Steve Kiprop took home the TV health reporting award for their story exposing the poor state of health at Kisii Level Five Hospital. The award recognizes journalists who generate interpretative stories that inform the public on health beyond medical terms.
Another Citizen TV team, consisting of Enock Sikolia and Steve Kiprop, won the TV environment reporting award for their report on garbage rivers. Their in-depth knowledge of conservation, climate change, and its impact on human life earned them the recognition.
Cameraman Mauritius Oduor won in the development category for the refugees empire report, jointly produced with Wilkister Nyabwa and Faiza Maganga. The award highlights advancements in agriculture, infrastructure, food, and security.
Dorcas Wangira received the ICT and Telecommunications reporting award for her outstanding articles on technological advancements. Radio Citizen's Emma Marevu won the gender reporting award in the radio category.
Other notable winners included Sarah Elderkin and Pius Nyamora, who received the lifetime achievement award. The AJEA awards, run by the Media Council of Kenya, recognize and award excellence in journalism, encouraging professionalism among journalists.
