On August 10, 2019, the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) recognized outstanding journalists in various categories. The event saw Standard Group narrowly beat Nation Media Group to take the top spot, but the crown went to a trio of independent journalists working on their own.

John Allan Namu's documentary 'The Profiteer' earned him the Journalist of the Year award. The documentary was a collaborative effort with Samuel Munia Wakaba and Elijah Kanyi.

John Kamau, a business writer for Sunday Nation, was feted as the Best Business Print Journalist for his story 'Fertiliser Politics and how factory bid was derailed.'

Other notable winners included Josphat Kioko of Voice of America Swahili service, who received the Business Radio Journalist award for his story 'Sea weed kilimo biashara.'
