Published on August 10, 2019, allegations have surfaced that Mavoko MP Patrick Makau mismanaged National Government Constituency Development Fund training cash for boda boda riders in the area.
The MP allegedly granted Nairobi-based Rocky Driving School an inflated tender through single sourcing, contrary to the procedure of open bidding.
According to sources, local firms in Machakos county were left out after open bidding was deferred, despite submitting lower prices.
Rocky Driving School, owned by a businessman of Indian origin, won the tender at Sh17,000 per boda boda rider, grossing a tidy sum from the almost 3,000 bodas in the county.
It is claimed that other driving schools had quoted figures as low as Sh11,000, and that the inflated figure would see the MP and his associates pocket Sh6,000 from every rider, through fiddling with CDF accounts.
“Rocky would be paid Sh17,000 but forfeit Sh6,000 to the MP!”
Enraged residents have appealed to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to probe the deal and have it cancelled.
Boda boda riders are also unhappy with the heavy-handed manner of Rocky Driving School, whose training schedule they claim is substandard as the trainers are not familiar with the roads in the region.
