On August 10, 2019, Embu MCAs expressed their frustration with the county government's failure to hire people living with disabilities in various county departments.
Nominated MCA Bernard Kandia criticized the county executive for being discriminative and insensitive to the physically challenged, stating that the county government had sidelined persons with disabilities in various appointments.
He also expressed frustration that his petition to the committee on administration, public service, and devolution seeking to compel the executive to recruit people living with disabilities was rubbished.
“Job vacancies should also be printed in braille to avoid locking out visually impaired professionals,” Kandia said during a session at the County Assembly.
Nominated MCA Margaret Lorna Kariuki revealed that even one individual with disabilities who had been hired as the head of the Embu County Revenue Authority was later dropped.
“If an audit was to be carried out in Embu county government since September 2017, I am certain that not a single person with disabilities has been employed. One person was employed in 2013, but he has since been removed from that position,” she said.
Makima MCA Phillip Nzangi challenged the executive to correct the anomaly of ignoring people with disabilities, while Muminji MCA Newton Kariuki hit out at the majority Jubilee Party for ignoring the plight of those living with disabilities.
