Published on August 10, 2019, a powerful typhoon, Typhoon Lekima, made landfall in China's Zhejiang Province, killing at least 18 people and destroying over 200 homes.
The storm, which made landfall at 1:45 a.m. near the city of Taizhou, weakened as it moved north, but still caused significant damage and disruption.
According to reports, the hardest-hit areas were Taizhou, Wenzhou, and Ningbo, with officials saying that more than 200,000 people in the Shanghai area had been moved as a precaution.
As the storm approached Shanghai, almost 300 flights and over 1,200 trains were canceled, and more than 25,000 tourists were evacuated from Putuo Mountain, southeast of Shanghai.
China had issued a red alert, the most serious of its four possible typhoon warnings, before the storm arrived, authorizing officials to order evacuations, suspend train and air travel, and force ships back to port.
