On August 10, 2019, a fuel tanker exploded in Tanzania, killing 57 people and injuring 65, according to state broadcaster TBC Taifa.
The blast occurred approximately 200 kilometers west of the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
Government spokesman Hassan Abbasi expressed his condolences on Twitter, stating, 'We have been saddened by reports of an accident involving a fuel truck in Morogoro, which caught fire and burned several people.'
Motorcyclists who rushed to the scene to collect the oil gushing onto the road were among the majority of victims, according to eyewitness accounts.
Firefighters from the Tanzania People's Defense Force (TPDF) and the Fire Brigade were deployed for a rescue mission, while the bodies were taken to the Morogoro Regional Hospital.
Dr. Steven Kwebwe, the Morogoro Regional Commissioner, described the incident as unprecedented, saying, 'This has never happened in Morogoro town.'
