As I reflect on my conversations with female leaders, I am reminded of the challenges they face in their pursuit of power. From navigating the murky waters of politics to dealing with deep-seated issues like sexual harassment, women in leadership must work twice as hard to be taken seriously.
However, the recent actions of Anne Thumbi, a nominated Member of County Assembly in Nairobi, have taken us several steps back. Her claim, as revealed by Governor Mike Sonko, that she and the late Ken Okoth sired a son has sparked a heated debate about the role of women in leadership.
According to Governor Sonko, he was asked 'nicely' to help his friend's lover, which has reaffirmed the stereotype that a woman in power must have slept her way to the top. This assertion has not only damaged the reputation of women in leadership but has also perpetuated the notion that power is best when it's sexually transmitted.
As women, we must stand against this stereotype and instead focus on our hard work, dedication, and vision for our communities. We must not let the actions of a few undermine the efforts of many who have worked tirelessly to get to where they are.
It's time for us to shift the narrative and focus on the qualities that make a good leader, rather than relying on stereotypes and assumptions. We must encourage women to run for office, to campaign on their merits, and to be voted in based on their qualifications and vision.
As I said, being a woman is not enough reason to be voted in. What do you bring to the table? Tell them. Let's work together to create a society where women in leadership are valued and respected for their hard work and dedication, not just for their physical appearance.
