On August 9, 2019, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Child Protection Unit began investigating allegations that child star Wendy Waeni was swindled by her former manager.

Wendy Waeni, a talented young performer, accused her former manager, Joe Mwangi, of exploiting her talent for personal gain. In a shocking revelation on Citizen TV's Jeff Koinange Live, Wendy Waeni stated that she had not received a single penny from her performances for the past five years.

She claimed to have performed in various countries, including Rwanda, Germany, and China, but had not received any payment. Wendy Waeni also stated that she lived in a single-room house in Huruma with her mother, who sold sweets and cigarettes at night to make ends meet.

Joe Mwangi, Wendy's former manager, denied the allegations, suggesting that the minor may have been coached on what to say. He also claimed that he had never traveled outside the country with Wendy Waeni, but a video surfaced showing the two visiting Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
