On August 9, 2019, the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) announced that it had launched an investigation into allegations of exploitation made by contortionist Wendy Waeni against her former manager Joe Mwangi.

Wendy Waeni, a Kenyan contortionist, had appeared on Citizen TV's JKL Show on Wednesday, where she accused her former manager of not sharing the money generated from her talent.

She claimed that despite performing all over the world, including Germany, China, and Rwanda, her family still lives in poverty in a single room in Huruma.

Following her claims, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior offered her free legal services.

Kenya's Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, tweeted that the Child Protection Unit had commenced investigations into the matter and would take legal action if Joe Mwangi was found culpable.

Many Kenyans on Twitter welcomed the announcement, with some expressing support for Wendy Waeni's quest for justice.
