Published on August 9, 2019, the European Commission has mobilised €50 million in emergency humanitarian funding to support drought-hit communities in the Horn of Africa.
The funding, which amounts to approximately $56 million, will be used to help communities purchase food and other essential needs.
According to Christos Stylianides, the EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, the funding will help extend humanitarian assistance in the affected areas, thereby reducing the risk of famine.
The Horn of Africa region, which includes Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda, is facing a severe drought that has left over 13 million people in need of urgent food assistance.
Of the allocated funds, Somalia will receive $28 million, followed by Ethiopia at $22 million. Kenya and Uganda will receive $3.3 million and $2.2 million respectively.
The funding will also be used to support public health services, treat severe malnutrition among toddlers and pregnant women, and provide stipends to sustain livelihoods.
