Deputy President William Ruto has been in the news for his role in a traditional dowry negotiation ceremony in Uasin Gishu county. The ceremony, known as koito, is a significant event in the Kalenjin community, marking the formalization of marriage between a husband and wife who have spent time together and even sired children.
According to reports, the function was attended by high-profile guests and top political leaders from Uasin Gishu and the Rift Valley region. Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, Women Rep Gladys Shollei, and Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi were among the leaders who graced the ceremony.
During the event, William Ruto took on the role of introducing his family and other guests to the in-laws and was also the lead negotiator for the dowry. The ceremony was characterized by traditional songs, dance, and jubilation.
