Kenyan billionaire Humphrey Kariuki, a citizen of Cyprus, is facing international arrest over alleged tax evasion amounting to Sh41 billion.
On Thursday, the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji approved tax evasion charges against Kariuki, who is accused of failing to pay taxes through his companies Africa Spirits Limited and Wines of the World.
According to the charges, Kariuki is also facing counts of fraud, being in possession of unaccustomed goods, and other offenses committed between 2014 and 2019.
DCI Director George Kinoti has applied for an international warrant of arrest through Interpol, stating, "I am applying for an international warrant of arrest for Humphrey Kariuki through Interpol for him to be arrested and detained anywhere in the world including all airports."
Earlier this year, a Nairobi court granted orders to freeze 11 bank accounts associated with Kariuki over alleged tax evasion amounting to Sh3 billion.
Police had also raided Africa Spirits Limited plant in Thika, Kiambu County, recovering Sh21 million counterfeit excise stamps and 312,000 liters of illicit liquor.
