Laikipia County has witnessed another tragic loss following the alleged cancer diagnosis of a 65-year-old man who took his own life at Kwa Mwaura village in Laikipia East Sub-county on Thursday evening.
According to Laikipia County Police Commander Maxwell Nyaema, the deceased, Tabathia Mugambi, hanged himself in his house, leaving behind a suicide note that stated he acted alone and his wife, Teresia Kabariti Nyokabi, should not be questioned.
Mr. Nyaema revealed that the deceased's nephew, Charles Maina, reported the incident to the police, who proceeded to the scene and found the body hanging on a rope inside the house.
The police boss noted that the type of cancer the deceased was suffering from and its stage were not immediately established.
The incident comes just a week after a 40-year-old woman suffering from breast cancer took her life in Naivasha, attributed to the trauma associated with the disease.
Her death is part of a growing concern over cancer-related deaths in Kenya, which have claimed the lives of prominent individuals, including Kibra MP Ken Okoth and former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore.
Laikipia Woman Representative Catherine Waruguru has proposed a Cancer Fund Bill 2019, calling on MPs to expedite its debate and approval, emphasizing the need for government commitment through funding and programs for cancer prevention, detection, and care.
