On August 16, 2019, at 2pm, the High Court in Nairobi will resume the sentencing of rugby players Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama, who were found guilty of rape charges on Thursday, August 8, 2019.
Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku postponed the sentencing to next Friday, terming the matter as 'quite hefty' and directing that the two remain in custody until then.
The two players were accused of gang raping an upcoming female musician in Nairobi on February 11, 2018, at Seefa apartments in Highrise.
Prosecution argued that the court should give them a minimum of 15 years as the law ascribes to send a lesson to youth who do not take sexual offences seriously.
However, defence lawyer Jimmy Wafula Simiyu prayed that the court considers a lenient and non-custodial sentence, citing that the two players do not have a criminal record and have been discontinued at their respective universities.
