On August 16, 2019, a court will decide the fate of rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Mahaga, who were charged with the rape of Wendy Kemunto in February 2018.
The prosecution team is seeking a 15-year imprisonment sentence or even life imprisonment for the duo.
According to the prosecution, a 15-year sentence will serve as a lesson to the youth, declaring rape a national disaster and sending a message that taking advantage of someone due to gender is not acceptable.
However, the defense team has pleaded with the court to consider the duo's circumstances and give them a non-custodial sentence, citing that they have faced public ridicule and humiliation since being charged.
The defense team pointed out that the duo has not participated in a single rugby match, has been discontinued from school, and has not been allowed to participate in any rugby games.
The case is ongoing, and the sentence will be made on August 16, 2019. The two players will remain in custody until then.
