Published on August 9, 2019, Safaricom Foundation has announced a partnership with Mombasa County to renovate and equip Coast General Hospital's newborn unit.
The project, valued at KES 10 million, is part of the foundation's Maternal and Child Health programme, which aims to promote access to maternal, neonatal, and child health services across the country.
Under this programme, the foundation has set aside KES 132 million for three years to support healthcare initiatives nationwide.
According to Sanda Ojiambo, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Safaricom, the foundation is implementing several projects in the Coast region as part of its Maternal and Child Health engagement with the six Coastal Counties.
“We want to advocate for access to maternal, neonatal, and child health services, health financing to ensure communities have access to healthcare when they need it, and lastly, use of technology to improve efficiency for results,” said Ms Ojiambo.
The newborn unit at Coast General Hospital will soon undergo a facelift, thanks to the partnership between the County Government and Safaricom Foundation. Mombasa County has pledged KES 9 million to equip the unit.
Coast General Hospital's newborn unit is expected to benefit from the renovation and equipment, which will improve healthcare services for mothers and newborns in the region.
According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS) 2014, neonatal mortality rate in the Coast region stood at 25 per 1000 live births, making it the second highest in the country.
