Published on August 9, 2019, a report by The Athletic has revealed that Saudi Arabia is now the leading contender to host Anthony Joshua's highly anticipated rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.
According to the report, Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, is in talks to secure a site deal to stage the massive bout in Riyadh on December 7 or 14. This move comes after Ruiz Jr expressed reservations about traveling to the UK for the rematch.
While the Principality Stadium in Cardiff was initially touted as the top contender to host the fight, Saudi Arabia's bid has gained significant momentum. A Saudi Arabia-based fight would also allow for the importation of neutral officials, which could be a major factor in convincing Ruiz Jr to agree to the rematch.
Joshua has reportedly agreed to host the fight in Saudi Arabia, and a $9m compensation package is being offered to Ruiz Jr in an attempt to persuade him to sign on the dotted line.
It's worth noting that a return to Madison Square Garden, where Ruiz Jr pulled off a stunning upset in June, is no longer on the table. Instead, the focus has shifted to the Middle East, with Qatar and Dubai also in the running to host the super fight.
Amir Khan, who recently fought in Saudi Arabia, has predicted that a big heavyweight star will be lured to the region soon. While he initially thought Tyson Fury would be the first to make the move, it appears that Joshua-Ruiz II is now the top priority.
