Nairobi residents are in for a surprise as Governor Mike Sonko pushes for a new tax on chicken brought from up-country.
According to the proposed bill, residents will have to pay a Sh25 tax for every chicken that enters the capital city.
This is part of a broader plan to increase revenue for Nairobi's Sh35.2 billion annual budget, announced in June by Nairobi Finance and Economic Planning Executive Charles Kerich.
The bill also includes increased parking fees, new charges for garbage collection, fire certificates, and inspection for cats and dogs.
Under the proposed Finance Bill, Nairobians will pay Sh400 parking fees, up from Sh200, and a fire certificate fee of Sh2,000 per annum for all city households.
Additionally, owners of cats and dogs from up-country will fork out Sh1,000, while health inspection fees for every dog and cat will be Sh1,000.
Garbage collection fees will range from Sh100 to Sh600 for all homes.
