On August 9, 2019, Kisumu was abuzz with excitement as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga prepared to host four East African presidents for the launch of the long-awaited Kisumu port.
According to sources, the event was expected to bring together President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, President John Magufuli of Tanzania, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda.
The Kisumu port, a multi-billion project initiated in Western Kenya, is expected to create between 100 and 200 direct jobs for the residents of Kisumu and the surrounding region.
As the launch date approached, the Kenya Ports Authority was busy preparing the port for the big event, with forklift trucks, mobile cranes, and tractor-trailers installed to ensure a smooth operation.
The port is set to serve several locations, including Port Victoria, Homa Bay, Mbita, Muhuru Bay pier, Luanda K'Otieno, Usenge beach, and Mfangango island.
