On August 9, 2019, allegations surfaced against Joe Mwangi, the former manager of gymnast Wendy Waeni, for exploiting her and others.
According to multiple sources, Mwangi would take Waeni to meet prominent people and media personalities, soliciting money from them under the guise of supporting her foundation.
Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi tweeted, 'It seems there is no office in Kenya that #joemwangi didn’t take Wendy Waeni. He must account for anything he received on behalf of the child.'
Several individuals, including singer Suzanna Owiyo, have come forward to share their experiences with Mwangi, who would use Waeni's social media accounts to chat with celebrities and solicit money.
ODM's Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also exposed Mwangi, sharing a story of how he tried to con him by asking to change a cheque meant for Waeni's foundation to be written in Mwangi's name.
Others have shared screenshots of their conversations with Mwangi, who would promise them jobs with the UN in exchange for money.
One Twitter user, @aziza_indrah, even shared Mwangi's address, stating that he lives in Kimbo, Thika road, and encouraging others to contact him.
