On August 9, 2019, a Nairobi Magistrate Court delivered a guilty verdict against Kenyan rugby players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba Mahaga for gang-rape.
The court's decision comes after a 15-month trial that began in April 2018, when the duo was charged with the offence of gang-rape at Seefar Apartments in Nairobi's Highrise estate.
According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on February 10, 2018, when the two players allegedly raped a female musician, Wendy Kemunto, overnight on her birthday.
Ms. Kemunto, who became pregnant after the ordeal, claimed that one of the rugby players had threatened to sue her if she went public with the incident.
Magistrate Martha Mutuku was set to deliver her verdict on Thursday, but Alex Olaba failed to show up, prompting the prosecution to apply for a warrant of arrest.
“On February 10, 2018 (my birthday) I was raped by two men. I was slipping in and out of consciousness maybe due to shock but I was helpless,” Ms. Kemunto had posted on Instagram, recounting her ordeal.
