On August 8, 2019, Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu faced another setback in his bid to remain in office. A court ruling upheld a magistrate's decision to bar him from accessing his office, in line with a previous ruling by Justice Mumbi.
According to Justice Ngenye Macharia, Waititu's deputy will take charge of the county, citing the governor's alleged moral illness as a reason for his inability to perform his duties effectively. The judge stated that the constitution allows for a deputy to take over in such cases, just as it would if the governor were physically ill.
Waititu had requested a review of his bail terms, which were set at 15 million shillings and 30 million shillings in bond. However, the court dismissed his request, terming the conditions favorable given his position.
As per the court's order, Waititu is allowed to return to the office to collect his personal belongings, but only in the presence of an investigator. He is not permitted to return to the office thereafter.
Justice Ngenye's ruling was a significant blow to Waititu's attempts to remain in office, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the governance of Kiambu County.
