On a tour of development projects in Nyeri County, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the issue of terror gangs. Speaking in Nyeri on August 8, 2019, Dr. Matiang'i stated that the government would apply pressure on the gangs until they are 'decimated.'
He also warned politicians who use the gangs to terrorize their opponents that their actions would not go unpunished. 'As a government, we are determined to deal with criminal gangs. We will apply pressure on them until they are all decimated,' Matiang'i said.
The CS's visit to Nyeri is seen as a precursor to President Uhuru Kenyatta's highly anticipated visit to the central region. Matiang'i was accompanied by a high-powered delegation, including Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Senator Ephraim Maina, and MPs Ngunjiri Wambugu, James Gichuhi, and Kanini Kega.
During his visit, Matiang'i also asked local administrators to share information on young people who might be engaged in terror activities. He stated that the government had credible intelligence that some youths had gone to Somalia and were back, having been trained to carry out terror attacks.
The CS commended central Kenya for being the only region to have cleared his registrations backlog, citing other regions with over 20,000 pending registrations. He also emphasized the government's commitment to completing development projects, including the Ruringu Stadium, and improving police welfare.
