On August 8, 2019, Manchester City confirmed that Leroy Sane would undergo surgery after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee.

The 23-year-old German international was injured during City's Community Shield win over Liverpool on August 4, 2019.

"Manchester City FC can confirm that Leroy Sane has damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee," City stated in a press release.

"He has undergone testing throughout the week, with a specialist doctor travelling to Manchester for further examinations to understand the extent of the injury," the statement added.

"Leroy will have surgery in the coming week," City announced.

As a result of the injury, Bayern Munich's plans to sign Sane may be put on hold. The German giants had identified Sane as a key target to replace departing club icons Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

Earlier this week, Bayern's star striker Robert Lewandowski publicly called on the club to sign three new players, putting pressure on the team to make a high-profile signing.

Reports in the German media claimed that Sane would be ruled out for several months, which could end interest in the German international from Bayern Munich.
