Research published in the journal Sleep in 2019 has shed light on the impact of nicotine and alcohol consumption on sleep quality.

Conducted by researchers at Florida Atlantic University, the study involved 785 participants who wore wrist-watch-like sensors to track their sleep patterns over a period of 5,164 days.

The study found that consuming nicotine and/or alcohol within four hours of bedtime was associated with worse sleep continuity compared to nights without these substances.

Notably, nicotine was found to be the most significant disruptor of sleep, with participants who used nicotine experiencing a 42-47 minute reduction in sleep duration on nights when they used it.

The study's findings support the importance of sleep health recommendations that promote the restriction of evening alcohol and nicotine use to improve sleep continuity.

Published on August 8, 2019, the study's results have significant implications for individuals looking to improve their sleep quality.
