Kenyan Rugby Players Found Guilty of Rape ¶
On August 9, 2019, Magistrate Martha Mutuku delivered a ruling in a Nairobi court, finding Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba, two Kenyan rugby players, guilty of raping a woman during a house party in Nairobi in 2018.
The incident occurred at Highrise Estate in Nairobi on February 10, 2018, during a house party. The victim, Wendy Kemunto, an upcoming musician, alleged that Wanyama and Olaba gang-raped her.
Wanyama and Olaba, who play for Kenya Harlequins, denied the accusations, claiming the intercourse was consensual. However, the court found them guilty, and they now risk a jail term.
According to a police statement, Wendy Kemunto said, "I was slipping in and out of consciousness maybe due to shock, but I was helpless. I couldn’t fight two men who play rugby professionally." She also claimed, "Obviously they were stronger, hence I let them do whatever they wanted to do the whole night."
Wanyama and Olaba have since been suspended pending determination of the matter.
