On August 7, 2019, a heated debate erupted in Kenya's National Assembly when temporary speaker Christopher Omulele ejected a lawmaker, Zuleikha Hassan, from the floor for bringing her five-month-old baby to a session.
Hassan, a mother of three, explained that she had to bring the baby to parliament because she was unable to make other arrangements and did not want to miss work.
Omulele responded, saying, “As much as she might want to take care of her child, this is not the place for it.”
Parliament orderlies forcibly removed Hassan from the chamber, prompting several legislators to walk out in protest. The incident occurred during World Breastfeeding Week, adding to the controversy.
