The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has announced the 2019 Safari Sevens tournament will be held on October 18-20 at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.

Defending champions Samurai Rugby, along with Apache and Red Wailers from the United Kingdom, have been invited to participate in the tournament.

Kenya's national teams, Shujaa and Morans, will also be in action, using the tournament as preparation for the Olympics qualifiers in South Africa in November.

Other teams invited to the tournament include France, South Africa, USA, Spain, Portugal, Namibia, and Hong Kong, all of whom are part of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Speaking at the launch, KRU vice chairman Thomas Opiyo said, “We are working towards having a bigger and better tournament both on and off the pitch. Both the players and fans will have something to look forward to.”

Although the tournament does not yet have a sponsor, Opiyo stated that their priority is to restore the Safari Sevens to its former glory before considering a bid for a World Sevens Series leg.

The poolings for the tournament will be announced at a later date.
