On August 7, 2019, Harambee Stars forward Michael Olunga and the team's captain Victor Wanyama filed a lawsuit against Menengai Oil Refineries Limited at the Milimani Law courts in Kenya.
The lawsuit alleges that Menengai Oil used an image of Wanyama and Olunga without their consent for promotional purposes during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Menengai Oil had tweeted the image, wishing Kenya good luck in the tournament, but Olunga and Wanyama argue that the post was intended to promote the company's products rather than wish the team well.
According to the lawsuit, Olunga is a professional footballer signed to Kashiwa Reysol Club in Japan and a star member of the Kenyan national football team.
Menengai Oil had shared another photo of Wanyama and Olunga embracing, with Wanyama holding a ball, which Olunga and Wanyama claim was also taken without their consent.
Wanyama had previously argued that the post was a violation of his personality and image rights, and the lawsuit seeks compensation for copyright infringement.
