On Wednesday afternoon, a racist tweet aimed at Liverpool's Egyptian striker Mo Salah was sent and shared by others, prompting an investigation by Merseyside Police.
Published on August 8, 2019, the tweet included a mocked-up image of the footballer and was treated as a hate crime by the force.
Merseyside Police is aware of the offensive tweet and will be investigating the matter, with a spokesman stating, "Hate crime in any guise will not be tolerated and those who use the internet to target others, and who commit a criminal offence such as hate crime in doing so, need to understand that they are not beyond the law."
Everton, the club with which the tweet is suspected to be connected, has condemned the racist message in the strongest terms and is looking into the matter further to understand if the Twitter user in question is known to the club.
